Government to Look at Improving Roadways

A feeder road in St. Peters
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 07, 2015 (SKNIS):  A plan to renovate roadways in St. Kitts is being considered by the Cabinet in order to improve the flow of traffic and enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians.

This was revealed by Attorney General, Honourable Vincent Byron Jr., in response to a question about the upkeep of feeder roads on last week’s edition of the Government’s radio programme “Working for You.”

Mr. Byron shared that feeder or minor roads are vital as they allow alternative routes for residents to access their homes. Most of these, particularly in the rural area, are unpaved or dirt roads. During the production of sugar, most of these roads were maintained by the St. Kitts Sugar Manufacturing Corporation (SSMC). With the Corporation’s closure a few years ago, several of these minor roads have not been subjected to the routine maintenance as before.

Attorney General Byron informed that the upkeep of the roads is currently being performed by several agencies; however, discussions are taking place to identify which department will primarily hold that responsibility.

“We will be looking at that and having it fixed,” Mr. Byron said.
