Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 08, 2015 (SKNIS): Today, December 8, is a day to celebrate fruitful relationships, the strengthening of ties and the importance of cordial and productive relations said the Honourable Mark Brantley, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Aviation, as St. Kitts and Nevis joins other CARICOM Member States in celebrating CARICOM-Cuba Day.

Minister Brantley stated that this day marks 43 years of strong ties of friendship and cooperation and that St. Kitts and Nevis is honoured to be a part of this auspicious occasion.

“This valued relationship between CARICOM and Cuba has blossomed over the years and continues to mature with the strengthening of cooperation in multiple areas,” he said, adding that Cuba is now considered the largest contributor among CARICOM’s international partners, due to the number of scholarship programmes offered in several areas of study, training in health and medicine, sports and agriculture-trade.

The foreign minister made reference to the embargo that was imposed on Cuba, stating that just like other CARICOM Member States, the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis stands strongly by Cuba.

“CARICOM and the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis continue to stand in solidarity with Cuba, in supporting the United Nations resolution presented annually at the UN’s General Assembly on the ‘Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Embargo’ imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,” he said. “We are pleased to announce that this year at the 70th session, for the first time, a total of 191 countries voted in support of the resolution.”

Minister Brantley reiterated the firm support of the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis to the people and Government of Cuba and said that they will continue to advocate for the removal of the US Embargo on Cuba. If successful, he said this can result in desirable relief to the Government and people of the Republic of Cuba.

This year, St. Kitts and Nevis and Cuba celebrates twenty years since establishing diplomatic ties and Minister Brantley has categorized the relationship as fruitful.

“The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis holds in highest regards its relationship with the people and the Government of the Republic of Cuba,” said Minister Brantley. “The relations between our countries boast a rewarding partnership with mutual benefits.”

His Excellency Hugo Ruiz Cabrera, Cuban Ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis, thanks the Government and people of the twin-island Federation for celebrating such a momentous occasion with Cuba and described the relations as rewarding, friendly and dynamic.

The foreign minister noted that to date, 21 students are presently pursuing studies in various fields in Cuba and thus far 90 students have graduated, some of whom have embarked on careers that have positively impacted every facet of St. Kitts and Nevis’ society, especially in education, healthcare, agriculture and the private sector.
