Ferry Terminal parking abuse leads to restrictions

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ABUSE of the parking lot at the Basseterre Ferry Terminal has prompted the Traffic Department to institute restrictions in that area which are scheduled to take effect in early January 2016.

Head of the Traffic Chief Inspector Carl Caines told SKNVibes that the Traffic Department has taken note of the numerous vehicles that are daily parked for extended periods in the slots provided in that area.

He said this has resulted in persons doing business with the ferries being forced to park in other areas of the road, which sometimes leads to obstruction of the flow of traffic.

“We have realised that there are individuals who leave their vehicles at the Ferry Terminal parking area for extended periods of time. It is really meant for those who are doing business in the area to park there and then move along quickly. But what we have seen is people are abusing the area and are even using it as a storage facility for their vehicles.

“Some people go to Nevis via the ferry and leave their vehicles there. This presents itself as a problem sometimes because when people actually go into that area to do business there is difficulty because they would have to find alternative parking, often obstructing the free flow of traffic. That has to change.”

The Inspector explained that, sometime in early January, the system which was employed on Fort Street would be implemented in that area, whereby vehicles would not be allowed to park for more than 30 minutes at a time.

He also indicated that the Traffic Department is prepared to police the area to ensure that the new regulations, once implemented, are being adhered to.
