PM Harris Underscores Important Leadership Traits for Law Enforcement Officers

Members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 12, 2015 (SKNIS): Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, speaking during the closing ceremony of the Regional Security System (RSS) Section Leaders’ Course on December 10, 2015, at NEMA Headquarters, pointed out six traits that are essential for successful police leaders.

Prime Minister Harris explained that Gary Ellis (2014) through “a survey of over 500 executives from the police, federal civil service, and military agencies,” was successful in identifying these six traits.

These six traits are “empathy, competence, credibility, communication, courage and collaboration. These are key qualities that must exist within a good leader of an efficient team,” said Dr. Harris.

Challenging participants of the course to utilize the skills learnt, Prime Minister Harris said, “you should ask yourself whether you are now in a better position to demonstrate these six traits, as well as the other more specific competencies that were discussed during the course.”

“Developing and executing the six traits of effective leadership would position your respective organisations to adapt to the global changes within law enforcement,” the prime minister said.

Prime Minister Harris told the participants that in order “to create the highest levels of safety and security to our Federation we need innovative leaders, leaders who are innovative thinkers,” and explained that these six traits will assist in making this objective a reality.
