BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FAMILY members of a young man said to be in his early 20s were plunged into grief this morning (Dec. 13) after they became aware of his shooting-death.

On learning of the incident, which took place on the premises where classrooms are being constructed to house students of Basseterre High School in Taylor’s Range, SKNVibes visited the scene and observed that investigations were already underway by members of the Violent Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Technicians, among others.

Speaking with this publication, a senior member of the Police Force said that the deceased was identified as Jeshawn Mayers of East Neverson Street and Pond Road, Newtown.

The senior officer stated that sometime after 11:00 a.m. officers at the Basseterre Police Station received reports of a shooting incident, and on arrival at the scene they found Mayers’ lifeless body lying on the ground along the passageway between two buildings on the western side of the premises.

District Medical Officer Dr. Mervin Laws was summoned to the scene and pronounced him dead.

According to reports, Myers was painting one of the school buildings when an individual or individuals approached and fired a number of shots in his direction. He was struck multiple times, including the head.

Grieving family members, including his distraught mother who had to be consoled, were also at the scene.

Following preliminary investigations, the deceased was removed from the scene by undertakers from the Eastern Benevolent Society Funeral Home.

According to Superintendent Andre Mitchell, no one was held in connection with this morning’s incident. He is however calling on anyone who may have information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrator(s) to contact the nearest police station or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477(TIPS).

Jeshawn Mayers’ death has taken to 30 the number of homicides committed in St. Kitts and Nevis for the year, which include the two individuals shot and killed by police – Philo Wallace on Nevis and Dominican Obi Baron in the Conaree Beach drug bust.
