BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE hard-working members of the Police Force’s Special Services Unit (SSU), nicknamed the ‘A Team’, have removed yet another illegal firearm and a quantity of ammunition off the streets of St. Kitts and Nevis.

This time it is another Glock Pistol.

A police communiqué stated that at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 11) during a stop and search operation in the Shadwell area, members of the SSU searched a vehicle and found an illegal Glock .45 calibre pistol with a magazine and eight matching rounds.

Two individuals are reportedly in custody and charges would be made shortly.

The communiqué quoted Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime, Ian Queeley as saying: “Citizen Safety is first and foremost for the Police Service. We will continue to embrace the Six Point Plan for the reduction of violent crime in the Federation. Our targeted operations, intelligence-based policing efforts and our collaboration with other law enforcement partners are bearing fruit.”

He noted that Friday night's seizure was testimony to that, adding, "I want to commend the SSU for their vigilance and their continued demonstrated commitment to Citizen Safety.”

The ACP noted that the police and other law enforcement agencies have developed a security and safety plan for the Christmas and Carnival Season, and vehicular stop and searches are a part of the effort.

“The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force appreciates the assistance it has received from the public and urges citizens to continue to share any information they may have regarding criminal activity by calling any police station or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477(TIPS),” the communiqué stated.

This has been the 20th illegal firearm taken off the streets of the twin-island Federation for the year; eight more than that of last year according to the police.
