Minister Liburd lauds Team Unity’s performance in first ten months

Cabinet of Team Unity Administration
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 17, 2015 (SKNIS)—Minister of Public Infrastructure, Posts, Urban Development and Transport, the Honourable Ian Patches Liburd, has rated highly the performance of the Team Unity Administration in light of what the government inherited from the previous administration. On a recent edition of the government’s radio programme “Working for You,” Minister Liburd pointed out some of the failings of the previous administration that Team Unity inherited and had to deal with once it took office.

“Lest we forget, in the area of crime, we inherited a country that was labelled the murder capital of the world. And I don’t find comfort in saying that, but it’s a statement of fact. This is what we inherited. Now that is the country the Denzil Douglas/Labour Party/NRP Administration left us. Over 200 murders under that administration,” Minister Liburd said. He said he believes the six-point crime fighting plan being implemented by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force will work overtime.

In addition to high crime, the minister pointed out that the government inherited a crumbling public infrastructure, including poor maintenance of government buildings while millions are spent on rental for government offices. He pointed to the poor state of the Basseterre High School and how the Team Unity Government is moving to solve that problem.

“We have already started and will complete for the next term a temporary location for all the students of Basseterre High School…we have already identified the site of a brand new Basseterre High School,” Minister Liburd said.
On the issue of agriculture, Minister Liburd said that that sector was totally neglected.

“You drive around the country, you see forestry… Nothing happening, but we import our bananas from the Windward Islands…trade cooperation is good but can’t we be self-sufficient in agriculture?” the minister asked.

Meanwhile, Minister Liburd raised concerns about the state of the Citizenship by Investment Programme (CBI) that the Team Unity Government inherited that was under threat because of the illicit actors in the programme prompting an advisory from the US Treasury Department and visa imposition by the Canadian Government.  In the interest of good governance, Minister Liburd referred to the government’s intent with the introduction of Term Limits legislation, an indication that Prime Minister the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris does not intend to remain in office “forever.” He is of the view that these initiatives of Team Unity have led to the positive results of a recent poll by revered pollster Don Anderson, which showed overwhelming support of nationals for the Government of National Unity.

“In ten months we couldn’t implement all the things we are committed to; that’s unrealistic,” he said.
