St. Kitts Tourism Authority Hosts Leading Journalists

Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts (29 April 2009) - Two prominent media titles from the UK, glossy women’s title, Cosmopolitan Magazine and online Travel TV site, TravelGuru TV, recently returned from St. Kitts after visiting the island to research stories for upcoming features.   Hosted by the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, the journalists representing the two titles were invited as part of an on-going media campaign to secure positive media coverage of St. Kitts.

In keeping with the St. Kitts Tourism Authority’s credo, “Explore, Feel, Love, Remember,” journalists Andrew Greenhouse and Sally Drye of Cosmopolitan and Cathy Bartrop and Catherine Leech of TravelGuru experienced a week of memorable and sensational attractions during their visit. On his departure, Andrew Greenhouse praised the organisation of his trip saying, “We felt welcomed the moment we landed in St. Kitts. The intimate size of the island means everything it has to offer is within a 30 minute drive – great when you want to spend the morning on one of the many uncluttered beaches and the afternoon in 'action' windsurfing, snorkeling, or zip-lining across the valley!”

“We also found the island to be full of engaging history and interesting people. Two favourite but contrasting moments were dinner at the idyllic Ottley's Plantation Inn with the family who run it and Mr X's Shiggidy Shack where grilled lobster, rum punch and fire-eating all featured heavily.  St Kitts is an eclectic island paradise with many surprises.”

Both the Cosmopolitan and Travelguru features will focus on St. Kitts’s emergence as a leading upmarket Caribbean holiday destination made possible by the recently instated weekly flights on British Airways from the UK (London Gatwick) to St. Kitts.

Senator Ricky Skerritt, Minister responsible for Tourism, Sports & Culture said, “we were delighted to be able to host such high-profile media on the island; positive media coverage is crucial to ensure St. Kitts remains top of mind with consumers and maintains its position as a leading destination for UK visitors. We hope their articles will offer visitors an insight in to the best that the island has to offer.”

Though both publications are providing editorial showcasing the best of St. Kitts, the projects differ somewhat in format.  While Andrew and Sally of Cosmopolitan are writing a “His and Hers” guide to St. Kitts focusing on activities that he and she can do both together and apart, the TravelGuru team is developing short films on St. Kitts which will appear on the TravelGuru TV website.  While one film will feature the natural scenic beauty of the island, the second film will look specifically at the many activities available.

The St. Kitts Tourism Authority would like to thank the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and Casino, Timothy Beach Resort and Rawlins Plantation for hosting the UK media. Many of the island’s most well known attractions were also instrumental in contributing to the success of the press tour, including Sky Safaris’ Zip Line, the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club, Blue Water Safaris’ Snorkel

Tour, Oliver Spencer’s Rainforest Tour, Kate Spencer’s gallery showcase, and the Brimstone Hill Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
