Off-duty police officer foils house-breaking intent

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AN off-duty officer is being praised by the High Command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force for foiling a house-breaking incident in the Shadwell area.

A police release, disseminated yesterday (Dec. 19), stated that the incident occurred on Thursday (Dec. 17) while the off-duty officer was in the area.

It states: “Upon observing some suspicious action at a house in the area, he sprang into action and held and searched two young men, which resulted in the discovery of a 32 inches flat screen TV and a red cover laptop.

“He then detained the two men in his custody as he called for assistance from his on duty co-workers.”

It also states that the scene was processed by members of the Forensic Services Unit.

It further states that APC Queeley said: “I am proud of the dedication of our officers who demonstrate their total commitment to keeping our communities safe even when they are off duty.”

The release did not provide adequate information on what drew the officer’s attention to the young men but to say he had observed some suspicion action.

This media house however spoke with a resident of the area who, on condition of anonymity, said “the officer also resides in Shadwell and he must have suspected that something was amiss because the two young men are not from the area”.

The resident confirmed that the officer did approach the duo and a search of the area within which they were seen resulted in the find of the television set and the laptop.

Further inquiries by this media house revealed that later on the day when the incident occurred, a homeowner in Shadwell had reported to the Basseterre Police Station that a number of items were stolen from their residence.

The homeowner was invited to the Station, where they identified the two items as their own.
