“I was focused on winning the crown” says Mr. GQ

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – HAVING placed Second Runner-up in this year’s Culturama Mr. Kool Competition, Javon Romney decided to take a chance and enter the first-ever National Carnival Mr. GQ Competition, a chance which resulted in him winning the title.

Last evening (Dec. 20) at the Sugar Mill on Port Zante, Romney was one of six contestants who strutted their stuff before the audience and doing their best to convince the judges that they were worthy of the crown.

And by the end of the event, Romney, who had won both the Interview and Costume Segments, was adjudged the winner.

In an interview with SKNVibes, the 20-year-old of Parson’s Village declared that when he entered the competition, he had one thing on his mind and that was capturing the crown.

“When I first signed up, I wasn’t worried at all, I just focused on doing it. I entered because I felt I had a good chance of winning and to express myself, to make my family proud. From the time I got the note that I am one of the participants who was picked for the show, I knew that all I had to do was win and be confident in myself. I wasn’t looking for anything else but the win, so I really had to be focused and stay confident in myself.”

Although he entered the Mr. Kool Competition earlier this year, Romney is no novice when it comes to competitions and performing on stage. He told SKNVibes that during his childhood he had entered two competitions, the Dieppe Bay Primary School Show and the Rotaract Prince and Princess Show in 2006-2007 placing First Runner Up in the former and winning the latter.

The participants of the Mr. GQ Competition appeared in five judged segments: Swimwear, Talent, Costume, Interview and GQ.

Mr. Stellar Engineering Nadaski Percival, who won the GQ Wear, Performing Talent and Beachwear Segments, was the First Runner-up; while the Second Runner-up position went to Romaine Belgrove Mr. Royal Logistics, who captured the Mr. Photogenic and the Chairperson’s Awards.

Romney, Mr. S & L Lighting, was also named Mr. Popular.

He said he is thankful to all who assisted and supported him throughout his journey, making special mention of those who prepared him to brave the stage.

“I would like to thank my chaperons Alphonso Henry and Shanroy Caesar and also Unoma Allen, my interview coach. She really pushed me. I had about 75 questions to practice on and she really pushed me. And I want to thank my friends and family who have supported me all the way.”

The employee of SNAPPER (St. Kitts Nevis Aqua Pilot Programme and Environmental Research) said he loves to entertain, especially in the area of performing arts. He is not yet certain about what his next move would be, and even if he did he would prefer not to divulge as he enjoys surprising people.
