BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – REPORTS indicate that while a Wades Garden resident was fast asleep, thieves broke into his home and stole a number of items including a sum of money.

The incident occurred on Sunday (Dec. 20) and according to a police press release issued this afternoon (Dec. 22), the incident occurred after 5:00 a.m. and the occupant of the home awoke before the men left the premises.

“The incident occurred around 5:20a.m… The occupant upon waking observed that two males were in the residence. The assailants took several items including two Samsung Tablets, one Blu tablet and EC$2,500…”

The release did not indicate much more about the incident save to indicate that “one male threatened the occupant not to inform the police”.

As indicated in the police communique, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley said there are measures which home occupants can take to safeguard against such breaches.

“This time of year sees an increase in attempted and house breakings…we urge families to ensure that they secure all doors and windows prior to retiring for the night. Check and lock all windows and doors, ensure all locks are secured, use the dead-bolt if you have one, replace locks that don’t work. Robberies are crimes of opportunity, if it’s difficult to get in, most robbers will leave… Take away the opportunity.”

ACP Queeley advised that individuals should not only be diligent regarding their property but they should also keep an eye out for their neighbours’ property.

“If you see suspicious activity around your property or your neighbours’ property, call the police. Looking out for each other and securing your property can reduce the chances of these robberies. If you see any criminal activity, call the nearest Police Station or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477(TIPS) with any information you may have. We can only reduce crime with your support.
