Temporary Suspension of Water Rationing

Press Release

December 23, 2015 -- Water consumers are asked to note that we are still experiencing low rainfall totals for this time of year. Rainfall up to November 30th was 25 inches; compared to 50 inches on average. As a result, inflows from our surface water sources continue to be below average. The recent showers only improved the situation slightly. These dry conditions are forecasted to continue into the New Year.

We significantly reduced abstraction from our wells throughout the island starting in August to avoid overexploitation and to control demand (water rationing) island wide. We sought and got the corporation of most of our consumers in reducing use and reporting leaks.

In an effort to show our appreciation for your sacrifice and in the spirit of Christmas and Carnival the Water Services Department is committed to temporarily suspend rationing for the period December 24, 2015 to January 03, 2016. Please note however that the supply may be interrupted without notice during this period as we are still operating below capacity. The most vulnerable areas are West Basseterre, South East Peninsula, St. Peters, Cayon and the Phillips/Molineaux area.

We continue to encourage consumers to observe the following measures outlined earlier this year:
    • All residents, government and private institutions should make the repair of leaks a priority
    • Persons without cisterns should explore purchasing large storage containers (500 gal. or more)
    • Businesses should implement a water management contingency plan which should involve daily monitoring of water meter
    • Government should ensure that critical institutions (hospitals, schools) have onsite standby water storage receptacles, based on vulnerability
    • No washing of vehicles with water hoses
    • Mandatory no watering of grass
    • Strict monitoring of standpipes
    • Fine or disconnection of service for violation of above, where applicable
    • No water to Cruise Vessels
    • No water for recreational use (Wet Down) during carnival
The Water Services Department apologises for any inconvenience caused by the interruption of service during the year and wishes all our valued consumers a Merry Christmas, Carnival and a Happy New Year. Consumers are asked to continue to be vigilant and contact the Water Services Department at 465-8000 for any other related concerns.
