BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Charles A. Halbert Public Library was recently given a boost that is expected to further promote learning of the Spanish language among the people of the Federation.

The donation, which came in the form of a set of books, was made by the Mexican Consulate in St. Kitts and Nevis by its Honorary Consul Jose Rosa.

In receiving the package, Library Chief Carrolyn Henry thanked Rosa for the kind gesture.

She expressed to SKNVibes that as the number of Spanish books the Library receives continue to grow, a section would be created specifically for Spanish literature.

Henry said the Consul’s donation would encourage growth of the Library’s membership of Spanish-speaking individuals in the community and also students who are learning Spanish as a foreign language.

The Consulate’s gift comes at a time when the Spanish-speaking population within the Federation is growing at a considerable rate. And because the books are available for use by both the English-speaking and Spanish-speaking population, it would act as a means of further bridging the gap between the two cultures.

Just as is the case with the popular Latin Fiesta, the books would go a long way in exposing the people of St. Kitts and Nevis to the culture of Spanish-speaking territories while highlighting the similarities that exist between both groups.

Honorary Consul Rosa expressed that the Consulate is pleased to make the donation and spoke of the exposure, to Mexican culture, it would bring.

“On behalf of the Honorary Consulate of Mexico in St. Kitts and Nevis and on my own behalf, it is a pleasure to donate these books to the library. The Ambassador of Mexico to the OECS, His Excellency Luis Manuel Lopez Moreno and I believe that the reading of these books will enhance the cultural exposure of Mexico to the general public of St. Kitts and Nevis.”
