January 16th, 2016 -- The Guyana Jaguars again got the better of the Leeward Islands Hurricanes in the NAGICO Super 50 tournament at the St. Pauls Recreational Grounds in St. Kitts. The Hurricanes scored only 172 all out, which proved a simple target for the Jaguars, who cruised to 174 for off 46.3 overs. Veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul score 57 runs, while Kishaul Singh knocked 44. The Hurricanes despite losing the match had the highest score with 88 runs from Shane Jeffers. Romario Shepard took 3 wickets for 37 runs for the Jaguars and Vermassy Permaul 2 for 28.
Jaguars coach Esuan Crandon believed his team did exactly what was planned—restrict the Hurricanes to under 200 and defend the total. “That was part of our game plan and the bowlers did well to restrict them,” Crandon said. “That’s the ideal performance we were looking for and as a unit we keep looking to improve in every game.” Going forward in the tournament, they are hoping to be more consistent, as while the bowlers are doing well, the batting performance fluctuates. He also saw the need for improvement in the fielding as well.
Meanwhile, Coach of the Leeewards Islands Hurricanes Reginald Benjamin knows that his team may be mathematically out of contention to qualify for the semi-finals, but has taken positives from this tournament, including the improved performance against Guyana. “Leeward Islands want to get back on top and we are not going to be mediocre in any way,” Coach Benjamin said. “We’re getting better as we go along and we’re kinda a new unit, new ideology, new philosophy but if only one of the top four batsmen would have scored, this would be a close game,” he added.
