    Roadtown, Tortola - Members of the House of Assembly have approved the appointment of Mr. Allan Parker as Acting Chairman of the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) during its meeting on April 28. 

     

    Mr. Parker’s appointment is effective March 1, 2009 for a period of three years. As chairman of the BVIEC, Mr. Parker’s duties will include the overall coordination of the board with the responsibility for setting policies for the BVI Electricity Corporation.

     

    “Mr. Parker has a mammoth task ahead of him. He is quite aware of our expectations,” stated Hon. Julian Fraser RA, Minister for Communications and Works. 

     

    “We expect that he will be successful in turning around the corporation and providing a reliable source of electricity to customers as well as reducing electricity rates,” Minister Fraser added.

    Mr. Parker holds an Associate Degree in Business Management from Valencia Community College in Orlando, Florida, USA. He is the general manager of Virgin Islands Motors and National Car Rental, and the owner of Dollar Rent-a- Car.  He served as Chairman of the BVI National Parks Trust from 2001-2003; Board member   at the BVI Chamber of Commerce in 1991 and as a member of the BVI Festival Committee from 1991-1994. 

     

    Mr. Parker’s appointment is in accordance with section 4(1) (a) of the BVIEC ordinance, Cap. 277 which states: “the corporation shall consist of a chairman appointed by the Governor in Cabinet after prior approval for the appointment has been obtained by a resolution passed by the House of Assembly.” The board was without a chairman following the resignation of Mrs. Margaret A. Penn on January 28, 2009.

     

    Other members of the board include Mr. Oliver Skelton, Mr. John Rhymer, Mr. Frederick V. Creque, Ms. Pearl Smith and Mr. N. Edison O’Neal. Ex-officio members are the General Manager, BVIEC and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works.

     

     The mission of the BVIEC is to provide the best possible service to its customers and aid in the development of the Territory’s electrical infrastructure.
