Cable & Wireless is offering students in St. Kitts & Nevis another opportunity to win fabulous prizes in an essay competition which it first launched in June this year.  The essay competition which is opened to high school students  in St. Kitts and Nevis requires students to write on the theme: Telecoms Liberalisation and the CSME: Opening New Doors, using no more than 1000 words.

The competition was first announced in June to coincide with the closing event at the CANTO conference.  According to Cable & Wireless Chief Executive Pat Walters, launching the competition then was an opportune time to gauge students understanding on two of the most topical issues in the OECS sub-region, while getting an appreciation of their perspective on these matters. The original deadline was extended from August 31st after just a smattering of entries was submitted within the stipulated time.

We were obviously disappointed with the number of entries and hoped that it was attributable only to the fact that students proceeded on vacation following their exams and not because they are indifferent to matters of this nature, commented Corporate Communications Manager, Laverne Caines.  Cable & Wireless has consequently enlisted the assistance of the Ministry of Education, which has since disseminated the details of the competition to the High Schools in both St. Kitts and Nevis.  Students are therefore encouraged to contact the Head of the English Department in their school to get the details and submit their entries.

The new deadline for the submission of essays is October 31st, 2005.  Three students would be selected to share in the top prizes of a laptop, a portable DVD player or a MP3 Player.  The announcement of the winners would be made public before the close of the current school term.
