BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 6TH 2005
Locals who are climbing up the ladder at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort are appealing to other nationals to seize the opportunities available by becoming an associate with that international hotel chain.
The appeal comes as the St. Kitts Marriott Resort has announced that it is holding an all day Job Fair on Saturday 8th October 2005 from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. at Port Zante in Basseterre.

The Marriott Resort has taken out full-page advertisements in the local newspapers seeking applications for nearly 80 positions ranging from bartenders, cooks, waitresses and banquet servers to Spa Manager, Food and Beverage Manager, Night Audit Clerks, Spa Receptionists, Restaurant Managers and Senior Sales Manager, Human Resources Supervisor and Event Technology Manager.

Cashiers, Front Desk Agents, Recreation Agents, Payroll Supervisor, Door Men, Bellmen, Pool and Beach Attendants and Room Attendants, Loss Prevention Agents, Hair Stylists, Room Control Agents, Golf Shop Clerks, Guest Relations Agents and Laundry attendants are also among the positions listed.

Young people or persons seeking employment at the Marriott should have a positive attitude and must be willing to learn, said Boyd's Villager, Karla Hanley, the Manager at the Blu Seafood Restaurant at the Marriott. Ms. Hanley, who began working as a Supervisor at the Marriott's Calypso Cafe Restaurant, previously worked  at the Fair View Inn, Jack Tar and OTI.

It is fun working here. There are opportunities and of course benefits also, she said in an interview with the Communications Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday.

Working at the Marriott has a lot of opportunities. There is always a lot to learn, said Office Manager in the Accounts Department, Andrea Brown. Brown, who began her employment as an Accounts Receipts Clerk at the Marriott in June 2003, was promoted to Accounts Supervisor in September that same year and was again promoted to Office Manager in May this year.

You always have something to learn. At Jack Tar where I previously worked, one was limited. At the Mariott, there is a wide scope of opportunities, said 27-year-old Brown, who hails from Buckley's Site. She said nearly 70 percent of the former employees of Jack Tar are working at the Marriott.

Derick Jacobs, who previously worked at Nevis Four Seasons as Banquet Head Houseman, took up a similar position at the Marriott in August 2001. He is now the Events Service Manager and has responsibility for all hotel events and special occasions requested by groups.
Guest Services Supervisor, Avrilette Francis-Hendrickson (standing) andGuest Services Agent, Yulanda Vanterpool.
It also involves the physical setting up and provision of the audio-visual requirements and providing top notch service that is expected from us, said Jacobs, who is from Buckley's Estate.

Comparing his 10-year employment with Four Seasons, Jacobs said while the two resorts are different, his tenure at the Marriott is most challenging.

Avrilette Francis-Hendrickson is another local who can boast of taking advantage of being an associate at the Mariott. It is very good. It is a learning experience to meet a lot of people from all over the world and helping them to enjoy their vacation or stay here, said Francis-Hendrickson, who took up employment at the Marriott as a Guest Services Agent in February 2003. In June this year, she was promoted Guest Services Supervisor.

You must be honest, willing to work hard and take advantage of the opportunities that allows one to grow in this industry, said Yulanda Vanterpool, who began working at the Marriott as a Recreation Agent and is now a Guest Services Agent.

The Marriott is offering full time and contract employment at Saturday's Job Fair and said past employees and previous applicants can also apply.

A special invitation has also been extended to former employees of the St. Kitts Sugar Manufacturing Corporation to attend the Marriott Job Fair and seek employment.

The St. Kitts Marriott Resort & Royal Beach Casino sits on 28 acres, including an 18-hole golf course and has 636 large guest rooms including 114 suites.

A five-story main building has 237 rooms and 33 suites; the rest are located in three-story garden houses.

The St. Kitts Marriott also boats the 40,000 square foot casino, a 15,000 square foot full service Spa and several restaurants the Royal Grill Steakhouse, Blu Seafood Restaurant, Calypso Café, Bohemia Beach Bar and Grill and La Cucina.
