Basseterre, St. Kitts, 7th February 2016 – Referees who officiate at various matches of the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) will be sporting new gear for the remainder of the football season.
Each referee was presented with jerseys, shorts, socks, whistles and flags, at a brief ceremony held at Football House on 6th February. The uniforms would allow all football referees to be properly dressed and functional in the games they officiate. The gear was presented to each official by General Secretary Stanley Jacobs who encouraged referees to be fully committed to the advancement of the sport.
In brief remarks on the occasion, Jacobs told the referees, “We want referees to be a big part of how we continue to grow football, and that is why we have invested the money in providing you with uniforms. In distributing these uniforms, the Football Association is showing its commitment to referring development. But, we want it to be a partnership between the referees and the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association, working together for the good of the game, and ensuring a professional level of referring.” Jacobs said that as the sport is developed in the federation, more games will have to be played, requiring more referees to be trained and qualified.
The general secretary informed also that the shortage of referees has hindered some aspects of the development program, emphasizing that it was critical to develop and sustain youth football as part of expanding football in the federation.
Executive member Corneil William reminded referees to continue training, learning executing while ensuring they are impartial and fair. He said it was important for referees to stay with the game at this stage of development of the game in St. Kitts and Nevis. He said, “I am encouraging you to stay in the referee program, to stay in football and to stay in officiating.” He alluded that referees have become trainers, assessors and instructors, and that they too could aspire to other important work in football.
