Police officers of Nevis Division awarded for outstanding performance

Premier of Nevis, Honourable Vance Amory, presents plaque to PC Antonio Brown, Constable of the Year 2015
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 08, 2016 (SKNIS): Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, praised nine of the Federation’s constables in the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) for their outstanding performance during the 13th Annual Constables Awards Ceremony, Nevis Division on Saturday, February 06.

The honourees were No. 599 Const. Shayne James, No. 621 Const. Keith Pemberton, No. 677 Const. Trevin Mills, No. 687 Const. Antonio Brown, No. 697 Const. Devon Jones, No. 723 Const. Monthana Mathias, No. 731 Const. Kaygel Jefferson, No. 748 Const. Kerran Nicholas, and No. 801 WPC Dejaunie Williams.

“I am pleased to recognize you as the best of the best this year, among those who have stood and said, I can do that, I can give more or I will walk in harm’s way,” said Prime Minister Harris.  “I therefore salute you, the 2016 Nevis Division Police Constables Awardees as exemplars of our finest police officers at your rank.”

Prime Minister Harris stated that the officers go beyond and above the call of duty for the betterment of the Federation.

“They are the people who are out at night trying to keep our communities safe when the rest of us are sleeping,” he said. “They are the ones who attend scenes of distress and have to walk away with their emotions intact as if unaffected, only to perhaps see another similar scene on another day. They have to try and build relationships where there is resistance and reluctance to follow the law.”

He further explained that the officers are tasked with providing comfort, while their situation is overlooked. “How can we know, if we do not walk in their shoes? We need these citizens who take the oath to serve the Federation not just to do their job but sometimes, to go beyond what is humanly possible. Today is about recognizing those people who do just that.”

Dr. Harris explained the process in which the officers are selected.

“In 2002 the Police Strategic Planning Group of the Nevis Division was formed in order to deal with those concerns raised about the escalation of crimes on the Island of Nevis,” he said. “The group included the Heads of Departments and Stations who reviewed and planned the strategy to promote more effective and efficient policing on the island. The Strategic Planning Group also appreciated that it was important to reward and recognise those men and women who are critical to the overall success of the Division.”

He noted that “at the end of the year, each Head of Department completes an appraisal” of staff in order to determine which Constable has performed remarkably and had gone beyond the call of duty.

This year’s Annual Constables Awardees were judged on areas such as management and delegation, professional knowledge and organization awareness, responses to emergencies and usual situations, ability to motivate staff, self-discipline, self-motivation, verbal communication skills, written communication skills, attitude towards others, self-control, judgment and decision making, leadership and confidence and responsibility
