Opposition supports new Police High Command, issues caution

By: SKNLPCU, Press Release

BASSETERRE, ST KITTS (SKNLPCU) – Inspite the concerns that the new High Command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force is on probation for one year, the law enforcement officers are getting the support of the opposition St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party with caution.

“I encourage the leadership of the Police Force now to work hard, work together because you have been put in a very ticklish position, where if you happen to make an error, the Prime Minister and Minister of National Security (Dr Timothy Harris) is saying he has the potential to remove you in the next 12 months,. There is no recourse for you because your substantive position that you came from in many cases have been filled,” said Member of Parliament for St Christopher 3 (West Basseterre), Hon Konris Maynard, who further admonished the police leadership “to do your job good.”

“Be independent and search for consensus among all stakeholders in our society. The Government and the Opposition (must) work together with the community to provide and assist wherever we can, but do not get caught up in that web of deception or that trap that Timothy Harris is trying to lay for you. Do good and let us rally behind you and let us bring down the scourge of crime which threatens the future of St Kitts and Nevis,” Maynard said on Wednesday’s edition of the popular “Issues” talk show on Freedom FM 106.5.

Labour Party chairperson and Member of Parliament for St Christopher 2 (Central Basseterre), Hon Marcella Liburd is of the view that the 12 month probationary period is illegal.

“I am certain that this is illegal. There is no security of tenure. They are coming from a secure position and place into an insecure positions. It means Harris does not have to wait until the 12 months have elapsed. If he thinks they are doing something that he does not like, or not doing their work, you be removed before the 12 months is up. There is no security of tenure,” said Liburd, who added: “There will be no confidence. All what happens is they will have a big stick hanging over their heads and that cannot be right.”

Former Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime, Mr Ian Queeley has been appointed Commissioner of Police.
Hilroy Brandy is Deputy Commissioner, and Terrence James, Andre Mitchell and Merclyn Hughes are Assistant Commissioners.
