BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH renewable energy on the front burner in the Federation, the Government of National Unity will this week open another solar farm in St. Kitts.

This will be the second such farm to be commissioned; the first one was done in 2013 at the RLB International.

“The Republic of China on Taiwan helped to fund the solar farm at the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw Airp ort, and come next week (this week) we are going to commission another solar farm just across the road from the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank.”

This pronouncement was made by Minister with Responsibility for Energy the Hon. Ian Liburd during his presentation at the recent launch of Earth Week SKN.

Liburd explained that the though the project would have started before he took office, commendations must be extended to the Taiwanese officials in St. Kitts and Nevis for their continued support to the Federation’s renewable energy initiatives.

“We are grateful for our friends from the Republic of China on Taiwan who have assisted the Government in the past with moving towards a green economy, which had started before our time.”

According to Minister Liburd, both farms are expected to generate some 1.25 megawatts of energy, while the Frigate Bay Farm which started in January last year is expected to provide about 0.5 megawatts.

He also explained that the solar farm at the airport is being used to power that facility on a daily basis.

Minister Liburd noted that the Government and people of the Republic of China on Taiwan have made and continue to make a number of meaningful contributions to the climate change initiative on the world stage.

He disclosed that the administration has a three-pronged approach to renewable energy and that from the first day the Government of National Unity took office, they have been holding discussions on its development.
