CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE man who was recently held on Nevis with an illegal firearm and a number of ammunition shortly after an innocent bystander was shot, was slapped with four charges including attempted murder.

A police communiqué stated that Lawton Forbes of Hamilton, Nevis was arrested and charged with the offences of attempted murder, possession of an illegal firearm, possession of ammunition and smuggling of an illegal firearm into the Federation.

“The charges,” the communiqué said, “stem from a shooting incident in Charlestown on Friday (March 4) and a stop and search conducted while officers were responding the reported gunfire in Charlestown. Forbes was stopped in the Ramsbury area and was seen throwing the weapon into the brush.”

Information that reached SKNVibes on the day of the incident stated that two individuals were engaged in an altercation in the vicinity of the Octagon Bar in Charlestown around 9:00 p.m., with one of them chasing the other and shot were fired during the process.

It also stated that while the incident was taking place, a male and a female, who were on Hunkins Drive, heard the reports of gunfire and they went into their vehicle in an effort to leave the area.

However, in doing so, a bullet entered the vehicle and struck the male on one of his arms.

A police report, issued on the following morning, stated that increased presence of officers in Charlestown resulted in the quick apprehension of the suspect, Lawton Forbes, who was making his escape in the Ramsbury area.

Contrary to today’s (Mar. 9) communiqué, the report had stated that a .45mm pistol and matching rounds of ammunition were found on Forbes’ person.

The pistol allegedly found on Forbes has taken to six, the number of illegal firearms and 73 rounds of ammunition taken off the streets of the twin-island Federation for the year.
