BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOUNDER of Operation Future Officer Lauston Percival is hoping that a proposal which he forwarded to the High Command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, regarding an increased level of partnership between the two entities, would find favour and its elements implemented.
Sometime last month, the proposal was forwarded and a meeting held with Percival and the five-member High Command.
In an interview with SKNVibes.com, Officer Percival explained that the elements of the proposal are designed to increase the bond between the community and the police, provide for a constant and consistent source of positive influence for school children and could assist in driving the level of criminal activity downward.
“The proposal was looking at the way forward for Operation Future and the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force. It deals with things like setting up a team which would comprise of myself and three other officers to do the school visits, looking into issues of truancy and being in a position to visit the schools on a daily basis, preparing monthly or quarterly reports which would be forwarded to the Commissioner of Police and the Ministry of National Security.
“Also what we had proposed to do is some community-based meetings which would go along with the Police Force’s initiative of community policing.
More than a decade ago, prior to the founding of Operation Future, different police officers were assigned to different schools and they were charged with the responsibility of visiting these schools on a regular basis, forging relationships with the staff and students there and ensuring that issues regarding delinquent children are addressed.
Percival indicated that it is from this backdrop that the Operation Future was formed and it is from this backdrop that the proposal was crafted and forwarded to the High Command.
He said the High Command indicated that it would need some time to look at the proposal and implement the aspects of it that would need to be implemented.
