Hrishikesh Srinivasah of St. Kitts & Nevis wins the Courts 7th Annual OECS Reading Competition 2015-16

    March 21st, 2016 -- Ten year old student of Maude Crosse Preparatory School – Nevis, Hrishikesh Srinivasan, has won the 7th Annual Courts OECS Reading Competition, which was held on March 3rd 2016 in Roseau, Dominica at the Arawak House of Culture Centre. 

     

    The regional finals saw national champions from Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia and St. Vincent & the Grenadines. Each student was given the same narrative to read and a different country’s news piece, where they were judged based on elements such as tone, audibility, eye-contact and more. It is with great pride that we at Courts commend each National finalist for such a phenomenal and high level of performance.  

    Although the National finalists’ read remarkably well, but it was Hrishikesh Srinivasan from St. Kitts & Nevis, with his impeccable reading abilities that captured the coveted title of “Courts OECS Reading Champion 2015”. Walking away with magnificent prizes such as the winner’s trophy, $5,000 in cash, a laptop, a Digicel Smart Phone for himself and an additionally $5,000 for his school. 

    The First-Runner-Up trophy and $3,000 cash was awarded to St. Vincent and the Grenadine’s, Shekinah Campbell. In second place, Jazz Dias from Antigua and Barbuda also walked away with $2,000 in cash. Both Shekinah and Jazz were given additional prizes consisting of a laptop and Digicel Smart Phone. Other participants’ Arianna Mercier of St. Lucia, Madannah Auguiste of Dominica, and Eden Otway of Grenada were given participation trophies and cash of $1,000 each, as a token of appreciation for their participation.

     “This year’s competition was a very keenly contested one and it shows that our students are getting better and better every year. This is why, we as judges will have to review the reading levels when selecting the material for the competition moving forward. This shows that the Courts Schools Reading Competition is indeed assisting in the fight against illiteracy in schools.” said Angella Mariatte – Head Judge.
    The eighth annual Courts OECS Reading Competition finals will be held in St. Kitts, October, 2016 where we hail our reigning champion, Hrishikesh Srinivasan. Eight and nine year olds from across the OECS are encouraged to participate in the preliminary rounds of the competition for a chance at being crowned the “Courts OECS Reading Champion 2016.”

    The Management and Staff of Courts OECS would like to thank the Ministries of Education across the OECS, Ministry Officials, Parents, Teachers and Schools who have supported this initiative from inception.  Without you, this competition would not have been successful.
