    “Water Is Life-Every Drop Counts”

UN World Water Day 2016 – “Water and Jobs”

March 15, 2016 -- The Water Services Department is hosting a month of activities to celebrate World Water Day, which is held annually on March 22nd as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.  The staff of the department will be engaging the community by hosting an Open Day at The Circus on Tuesday April 1st, visiting schools, both primary and secondary, appearing on radio and television throughout the month, hosting an island wide ‘Water-Cade’, guided tour to Wingfield Water Source on Saturday, April 16th from 7 AM to 11 AM. Please find attached an agenda with the full month of activities.

The theme adopted this year is ‘Water and Jobs’ are the essential building blocks of life. But it is more than just essential to quench thirst or protect health, water is vital for creating jobs and supporting economic, social, and human development. Today, half of the world's workers - 1.5 billion people - work in water-related sectors. Moreover, nearly all jobs, regardless of the sector, depend directly on water. Yet, despite the indelible link between jobs and water, millions of people whose livelihoods depend on water are often not recognized.

Safe, sufficient, and reliable water resources are essential to the functioning of every aspect and sector of society, including agricultural and energy production, industry, and economic growth, human and environmental health, and national security.

This is a call for action; for all of us to work together to manage and utilize our water resources in a sustainable manner, if we are to achieve ‘better water for better jobs’. Come and join us during our month of activities to know more about how water connects us all and the ways we can work together to ensure livelihoods for generations to come.
