BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE much talked about upgrade at the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport is moving apace, according to Minister of Public Infrastructure Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd.

Speaking with SKNVibes, the Minister explained that the project is currently in its second phase, which entails the enhancement of the departure area which was also part of the first phase that began in 2015.

“During phase two at the departure area, we are increasing the visitor experience…that is their departure. We want them to have the same experience that they would have when they arrive. We want them to have a send off in an atmosphere conductive to friendliness.”

It was during the Government of National Unity’s first budget presentation back in December that the Minister, while updating the National Assembly on infrastructure plans for country, announced the upgrade.

Additionally, upgrades to the deep water cargo port, ferry dock, Port Zante and the cruise terminal were several other projects up for remedial works.

Giving some additional information on the second phase, Minister Liburd said: “We are looking at a new counter system - that is a new check-in system - and also some new screens while tilling the area. We are also looking to upgrade all the amenities covered at the airport.”

According to Liburd, this would increase efficiency at the airport and allow for a more positive feedback from those departing the Federation.

Phase one of the project saw the government expanding the departure facility so as to accommodate more passengers during peak periods.

“In phase one, we expanded the departure area upstairs and the lounge. The airport was constructed to accommodate 400 passengers per peak hour period, and we have passed that some years ago. More passenger space was needed as well as shopping areas upstairs, so phase two was a follow up to that.”

The project is expected to be completed shortly.
