Basseterre unit quickly brought ECCB fire under control

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A fire which broke out at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank on Thursday (Mar. 24) was quickly brought under control and prevented from causing mass damage at the financial institution.

SKNVibes understands that the fire might have begun shortly after 10:00 a.m. with an air conditioning unit.

Chief of the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services EveretteO’Garro told SKNVibes that one of his units received the report and responded at about 10:15 a.m.

He said that according to information given to him, the alarm was raised when an ECCB technician, who was on his way to Basseterre, observed smoke was coming from the roof of the building.

He said when the unit got to the site it found that “the air conditioning unit was on fire and it was totally destroyed”.

The officers, who wasted no time in springing into action, had the difficult task of travelling up a number of flights of stairs while carrying heavy equipment in order to get to the seat of the fire.

O’Garro said it was located on a ledge in the upper roofing of the building.

The electricity supply to that area had to be cut in order for the officers to properly extinguish the fire.
