Fruit Fly Surveillance Program

Multilure traps that will be hung in trees
By: Department of Agriculture, Press Release

29th March, 2016 -- The Department of Agriculture would like to inform the general public that it has launched a Fruit Fly Surveillance Program which covers production areas, urban areas, marginal areas and points of entry; which commenced on March 21st 2016. This program is going to be used as an early detection mechanism for exotic fruit flies such as the Mediterranean Fruit Fly and Carambola Fruit Fly which are currently not present in the Federation and any other exotic fruit fly species.

We are soliciting the cooperation and support of the general public where necessary for the successful execution of this program. It is essential that traps be placed in and around “high risk” areas where any exotic species may enter, including Ports of entry, fruit orchards, fruit warehouses and in and around residential areas. To this end, we ask that you do not disturb the traps that will be hanging from trees as this would hinder the effectiveness of the traps. Agricultural Officers will be monitoring the traps at regular intervals.

We thank you for your cooperation and support in this endeavour to prevent the introduction and spread of new pests and diseases in St. Kitts that may harm the agricultural sector.
