Joy and Camaraderie on Moravian’s Senior Club boat ride

Senior club members and friends on boatride
Lorna Callender

ON EASTER MONDAY, family and friends of the Moravian Senior Club embarked on a picnic cruise aboard the Prince DeVonte J. It was one of the activities marking the 5th anniversary of the Club’s existence.

The Club meets once a week, on Tuesday mornings, from 10.00a.m until noon, at the Methodist Church Hall, Seaton Street and engages in a wide ranging programme of activities to meet the varied interests of its members. There is a devotional component; there are age- appropriate physical exercises; there are word games and board games; there are field trips to places of historical and cultural interest; guest speakers on topics of relevance to the group and so forth.  Membership is open to persons, male and female, aged 55 and over, who are either fully or semi-retired. Current membership is just over 90. A warm welcome is extended to anyone wishing to join the group.

Old and young gathered for the boat ride as some members were accompanied by children or grandchildren; they came armed with their picnic lunches and local drinks…enough to feed themselves and those around them and a true spirit of camaraderie prevailed throughout the trip. Returning nationals visiting from abroad were quickly embraced, made to feel ‘belongers’ again and became part of the sharing and caring crowd. They were able to refresh their palates with the mauby and ginger beer that flowed and one could see sandwiches, chicken legs, conkees and more, quickly disappearing as if they had no particular owner.

All on the boat were treated to cake and sparkling cider, compliments of the Senior Club and they were asked to share in their 5th anniversary celebration.

It was a good day for sailing and as the party boat hugged the coastline all the way down to the end of the Peninsular, revelers were able to see the new developments that one has only heard about in some cases. The new Hyatt Hotel and the new marina at Christophe Harbour came into view, as well as more familiar spots like the Salt Plage, Reggae Beach and the Spice Mill restaurant over at Cockleshell Bay

The lively spirits were enhanced in no small way by the DJ and the excellent music system of Prince DeVonte J. They doled out appropriate oldies and the hottest gospel music, making it impossible for the seniors not to shake a leg. Those who did not shake a leg could be seen nodding their heads in rhythm or tapping their feet to keep in sync with the heavenly vibes.  Later, long lines of dancing boat riders snaked around the lower deck between the tables….dancing to “Gimme that old time religion…”.  As King Konris related, It was like a ‘Sunday J’ouvert”.

All too soon it came to an end, and the seniors, assisted by the caring crew, disembarked and wended their way to their vehicles and to home, basking in the feelings of a well spent day.
