Cayon Football Club bridging gap with older generation

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE reasons for the FLOW 4G Cayon Football Club’s recent elderly-centered activity are commendable to say the least and it is one that other groups should emulate.

On Sunday (Mar. 27), members of the group which included members of the FLOW 4G Cayon Rockets football team, gathered a number of food baskets and visited the elderly and shut-in individuals in the Lower Cayon area.

Some quality time was spent with these individuals and the baskets were distributed accordingly.

President of the Club Kaznee Williams told SKNVibes that the group took a decision to focus more on community-related activities in 2016. This activity, she explained, is just phase one of the Club’s attempt to bridge the divide that exists between the older and younger generations.

“The reason for us doing this is because sometimesthose older members in our community tend to get lonely or feel left out and they tend not to get much attention as they did when they were younger. So we took the initiative to show them some appreciation because without them we would not be here. While at their homes we honoured them for their contributions to our community.”

Williams recalled the warmth which was felt when, having gone to one individual’s home, the group was welcomed with opened arms.

“It touched all of us when one particular individual, who is shut-in, was so warm and welcoming. She kept saying ‘is good you all aine forget me’. It made us feel so good that we were able to put a smile on her face and the way she welcomed us. Just putting a smile on their faces and showing them that we really appreciate the path that they set for us is more than worth it.”

The Club’s President explained that there is a misconception about young people which she hopes to dispel and this is one of the activities through which it could be achieved.

“During the event we got to learn much from the elderly. We though it was a great idea to have the players interact with the elderly. We tend to have this notion that young people are unruly and this was one of the activities to show that not all young people are unruly and that we are paying attention to those older members of our society.”

The second phase of this particular activity will see the group paying homage to other elderly members of the Cayon community. And as Williams indicated, “We will ensure that we get to them all. None will be left out.”
