One charged with Fire Officer Caines' murder

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force informed that it has made headway in investigating the murder of Fire Officer Javier Caines as one person has been charged with the offence.

     

    A communique disseminated by the Police last evening (Apr. 7) indicated that Deshaun Leader of Main Street, St. Pauls was formally arrested and charged on Wednesday for Caines’ murder and also the attempted murder of Aldfred Browne.

     

    The incident which led to his arrest occurred on the evening of March 5, 2016. According to information received by this publication, both men along with a third, were attempting to leave a party in Sandy Point via a vehicle, and before that could have taken place, an individual reportedly approached and opened fire on them. The third individual, SKNVibes understands, emerged from the incident unscathed.

     

    Browne was injured and transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital for treatment and Caines died on the scene.

     

    Fire Officer Caines, who hailed from St. Pauls, was laid to rest on March 23.

     

    The communique quoted head of the Violent Crimes Unit Inspector Mackie Smith as thanking those who assisted with the inquiries and indicated that there are other cases currently being investigated for which relevant information would be appreciated.

     

    "Bringing these charges against those responsible we hope will help in the healing process for this family, and the community. We express our appreciation for all who provided information into this incident…We have other cases that are currently being investigated, and we urge the community to come forward and provide whatever information they may have that can help to bring closure to the cases and help the families to heal.

     

    “All you have to do is call any Police Station with the information or Crime Stoppers, the anonymous hotline at 1-800-8477.” 

     

    Caines was the Federation’s seventh murder victim for the year.
