Youth Department offers grant for new registration

Members of Peak Faith Foundation Ministries pose with staff of the Cardin Home along representatives of Cash Wiz and the Department of Youth Empowerment

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 05, 2016 (SKNIS): A new incentive is now available for youth-oriented groups to register with the Department of Youth Empowerment.

Senior Youth Officer, Pierre Liburd, said there are many benefits for groups to document their existence with the government agency and one such attraction was the availability to access up to EC$500 in support.

The funds were made available through “The Youth Service Grant Initiative” being financed by local company, Cash Wiz. After registering, groups can access the funding by implementing a project that benefits persons in the community. They will have to formally apply for the support.

“It’s a simple project form that they fill out that states their idea, the problem or gap they identify in the community and how they will go about addressing it,” Senior Youth Officer Liburd stated. Project costs are also requested on the form. If approved, the group will be invited to submit invoices up to $500 that will be covered.

Groups already registered with the department are also eligible for the grant. Liburd said the sponsor is grateful for the opportunity to participate in the project and welcomes partnerships for social causes. Such was the case last February when members of the Peak Faith Foundation Ministries repainted sections of the Cardin Home. The group received funding under the grant.

There are other benefits for youth groups to register.

“There are organizations both locally and regionally that constantly approach the department for a list of registered youth organizations to provide access for each of them to get training, grants and the like,” Mr. Liburd said. Groups that are not registered cannot be considered for selection.. Additionally, registration provides access to technical support and mentorship services, invitations to national and regional youth-related activities, greater access to other government agencies, and duty concessions on goods that benefit the group’s work.

Interested individuals can register their group at the Department of Youth Empowerment on Church Street. Additional information is available at telephone 467-1393.
