Newtown wraps up top spot in Playoffs

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE race for the Final Four Playoffs is in full swing and four teams remain in the hunt for three spots in the knockout tournament.

Conaree, St. Paul’s, Garden Hotspurs and Cayon are the teams in the hunt for the final spots as table toppers Newtown United continue their dominant ways to book their spot.

In the latest round of matches over the weekend, Newtown brushed aside hapless Rivers of Living Water 3-0 to increase their lead atop the table to seven points over second place Conaree.

An own goal from Ahmal Mills of Rivers of Living Water opened the score in the 28th minute before Sashi Isaac 38th minute and Ian ‘Rumpy’ Lake 79th minute strikes gave the East Basseterre-based team victory on Saturday (May 7) at the Kim Collins Athletics Stadium.

Newtown is currently on top with 55 points while Conaree has chalked up 48.

Also on Saturday, a double from Tahir Hanley in the 13th and 47th minutes saw Hobson Enterprises Garden Hotspurs edging out S.L. Horsford St. Paul’s United 2-1 to leapfrog the defending champions to fourth in the points table. Ajah Jules scorded the consolation goal for St Paul’s in the 67th minute.

The victory puts Garden Hotspurs two points clear of the St. Paul’s and one point behind third placed Cayon Rockets.

On the following day SOL Island Auto Conaree gunned down Bath United  12-1 to put one foot into the Playoffs.

With two matches remaining, Conaree needs one win to confirm their trip to the knockout round, as they cannot fall lower than third place in the standings.

Double strikes from Kirkland Harris (5th and 67th minutes), Kadeem Lewis (27th and 67th minutes) and Byun Morson (33th and 59th minutes) supported a sterling helmet trick from Errol O'Loughlin.

He scored four goals in the match netting in the 30th, 34th, 78th and 91st minutes.

Michael Samuel in the 36th minute supported his team’s efforts while an own goal from Aykeese Smith of Bath United added to the tally.

In other results, Flow 4G Cayon Rockets gained a 1-nil victors over Fast Cash SPD United, with
Kevin Benjamin netting a 77th minute penalty.

And Ram’s Village Superstars downed ELCO Limited St. Peter's 3-1 in a mid-table clash.

Ricaldo Archibald did a double in the 74th and 89th minutes and Stephen Clarke scored in the 88th minute. Adonis Stephen in the 42nd minute was the only person to write his name on the scorer’s sheet for St. Peter’s
