Geothermal energy will produce clean energy for the Caribbean

Jacques Chouraki, President of Teranov
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 13, 2016 (SKNIS): Jacques Chouraki, President of Teranov, Guadeloupe, said that the benefits emerging from geothermal energy are vast and noted that geothermal is an environment-friendly energy.

The President of Teranov was at the time appearing on the Government’s weekly radio and television programme “Working for You” on Wednesday, May 11.

“It’s a resource which is clean,” he said. “There is almost no pollution [and] I would say almost because you can never say 100 percent, but it is 99.99 percent emission free. It is, I would say cheap in a way because the hot water has a very decent price compared to fossil fuel energy.”

Mr. Chouraki said that geothermal energy is well-organized, well-constructed, and well-maintained, and it is a resource which is renewable.

He briefly explained what geothermal energy is.

“Geothermal energy is something very simple in principle,” said Chouraki.  “It is the energy of the earth. The geothermal energy is basically to drill a few wells from the surface of the earth down into those reservoirs to bring this hot water to the surface, use it to produce steam to separate the water from the steam and then use the steam to make turbine movement and then generate electricity.

He further added that through different wells the water will be reinjected into the reservoirs to make it 100 percent renewable.

Mr. Chouraki stated that the Caribbean is a great place for geothermal because it is located in a seismic area. He noted that the islands have naturally fractured reservoirs and the heat from the volcanoes which are the combination of the two elements that allow the creation of geothermal energy.

Teranov is a French engineering and services company for new and renewable energy, dedicated towards high enthalpy geothermal energy development in Latin America and The Caribbean Region.

In September 2015, the Honourable Ian “Patches” Liburd, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Posts, Urban Development and Transport, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Teranov, which includes a road map that can possibly see the production of geothermal energy in St. Kitts in 2020.  Later in the year, Teranov began geothermal exploration exercises in the Sandy Point area around Brimstone Hill, going to the top of Mount Liamigua.
