BVI, 25 May 2016 - World Press Freedom Day will be the focus of a special Government Information Service (GIS) television programme that airs next Tuesday.

The Day, officially observed on May 3, was established by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom; assess the state of press freedom throughout the world; defend the media from attacks on their independence; and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The GIS interview will replace the previously planned panel discussion, and will feature Secretary General of the BVI National Commission for UNESCO, Dr. Allison Flax-Archer, discussing the role of journalism and World Press Freedom Day. Dr. Flax-Archer will be joined by several local journalists.

Dr. Flax-Archer stated, “The Journalism Panel Discussion has taken on a new format and we at the BVI National Commission for UNESCO are pleased that information will be shared with the media and the public as it relates to World Press Freedom Day. We trust that the information will enlighten persons on the role of the press as a free and responsible fraternity."

The public is invited to view the interview online at the Government of the Virgin Islands’ YouTube Channel (www.youtube.com/bvigovernment) along with tuning in to JTV Channel 55 next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

The public can also view the UNESCO Director General’s World Press Freedom Day Message via web link - http://en.unesco.org/world-press-freedom-day-2016.

The Ministry of Education and Culture is committed to creating a “Culture of Excellence”.
