BASSETERRE, ST. Kitts - THE Government of National Unity will later this year begin constructing a number of homes in St. Kitts and Nevis as part of its housing initiative.

Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris yesterday (May 30) announced that his Government has set aside some $30M for the construction of the houses.

“So we shall start construction of our housing programme...$30M we have committed for housing construction work this year.”

He however did not indicate how many homes would be built under this programme, only stating that “at a later date the details will be forthcoming”, stressing that the project would begin this year.

The Government, in its elections Manifesto of 2015, promised the construction of some 2,000 homes and the provision of 3,000 house lots for persons in need.

Currently, the public is awaiting the distribution of the houses that were built under the former administration.

The Minister of Housing, the Hon. Eugene Hamilton, had informed this media house that the homes were broken into and had caused a delay in the process.

It is the view of many that the houses would not be distributed until the investigations and remedial work on the damage to the buildings are complete, but no timeframe has been outlined.

The Government is also working on drafting the National Housing Policy which is expected to be completed later this year.
