June 1st, 2016 -- On April 30, 2016, nationals and friends of the St. Kitts and Nevis Nationals Association of Washington, DC (SKNNA-DC) laced up their gym shoes for the Annual 5K charity walk on the National Mall of Washington, DC.
But this year was different. The association decided to demonstrate CARICOM spirit and unity by embarking on a project - Rebuild Dominica: Campbell Primary School. In August 2015, the government and people of the Commonwealth of Dominica suffered tremendously from Tropical Storm Erika, one of the worst natural disasters affecting the island since 1979. In light of this massive and wide spread devastation, SKNNA-DC knew it had to extend its community service efforts beyond the shores of St. Kitts and Nevis and stand in solidarity with Dominica in its long term rebuilding efforts. Through the assistance of the Embassy of the Commonwealth of Dominica and that country’s Ministry of Education, the association identified and adopted the Campbell Primary School.
The walk was supported by members of the association, their family and friends and fellow CARICOM nationals. The members networked to raise funds for the Campbell Primary School, using traditional fund raising methods and integrating social media tools such as Facebook and GoFundMe. Funds will be channeled to the school so it can continue educating and shaping the minds of our youth.
The association’s President, Mr. Vincent Hodge, expressed deep gratitude to the organizers, Ms. Kemoy Liburd-Chow and Mr. Neville Mitcham, and the supporters for walking with SKNNA-DC, who collectively made the walk a success. Mr. Hodge also recognized the presence of Ambassador Thelma Phillip-Browne and also Hubert Charles, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Commonwealth of Dominica and his wife. At the end of the walk, Ambassador Charles addressed the walkers, thanking SKNNA-DC for organizing the event and giving back to Dominica.
