Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 23, 2016 (SKNIS): A team of Information Technology (IT) consultants from the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) is presently in the Federation providing technical support to the Department of Information Technology in developing its Government Communications Network.
At the opening ceremony for a weeklong forum presently being held at the Customs Conference Room, officials from the Department of Information Technology, the CTU and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) are sensitizing key stakeholders about the objectives, activities and expected results of the Government Wide Area Network (G1) project.
“The process by which this is going to be done involves certain activities,” said the Honourable Vincent Byron, Minister of Communications. “It involves certification of our current and future communications needs as a government. It involves initially an audit of existing government communication facilities and services. We are expected to provide on-the-job training in network record management and planning for designated staff.”
In addition to the above mentioned activities, the minister said that there will also be the design of a new or reconfigured network to address service, security and reliability needs, as well as the development of the technical requirement for a request for a proposal to have in place the relevant equipment and services for provisioning and maintaining the network.
“We are committed in this government to establishing a government wide area network that will deliver reliable services and efficiencies not only within government but to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis,” said the minister.
Amicia Mussenden, Director of Information Technology, noted that the forum provides an avenue for information to be shared based on how the project is expected to impact government’s communication, enhance the delivery of e-government services and contribute to the wider socio-economic development of the Federation”.
Sylvester Cadette, Programme Officer at ITU, said that the organization is pleased to partner with the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis on such a critical project.
“We (the ITU) see the significance of engaging various governments in various projects that would leverage traditional sectors, as well as the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) sector in and of itself in terms of bringing the desired change that is required for your sustained development,” said the ITU’s programme officer, while noting that broadband is of critical importance to any country.
The team of IT consultants will journey to Nevis to engage key stakeholders in similar exercises.
