Tuesday, June 28, 2016 – The Tortola Toastmasters Club was applauded for nurturing the leadership abilities of the British Virgin Islands community at its 12th anniversary “Black and White Dinner and Auction” held on Saturday, June 25.  Former president of the Tortola Toastmasters Club, Mr. Shane Xavier, in delivering the keynote address, highlighted the benefits of being a Toastmaster. Mr. Xavier said, “Toastmasters has had a profound influence on my life, and for me to downplay its significance would be ludicrous. I have met great role models and gained, and maintained, friendships with positive and remarkable people.”  He added that the skills acquired while serving as part of the Executive Committee have been transferrable into the world of school, work and normal everyday life.

He said, “When faced with job interviews and presentations, I am always prepared because this toastmasters club was my training ground.” Mr. Xavier noted, “We all have the potential to be a leader in some form, and Toastmasters helps to nurture one’s pending capability. Taking on responsibilities such as Toastmaster of the Evening, General Evaluator, Sargent at Arms or Treasurer all play some part in molding individuals into stronger figures than they once were, while still planting other seeds of greatness. No matter how big or small, each role within this organisation allows each individual to develop.” The elegant and eloquent evening saw the introduction of the new club executives for the Toastmaster year 2016/2017.

They are President, Yvonne Thomas, Immediate Past President, John Lewis, Secretary, Elsi Industrius, Vice President of Education, Camille Merry, Vice President of Membership, Ingrid Alexander-Callwood, Vice President of Public Relations, Nadia James-Harris and Sergeant-at-Arms, Devon Brown.

In addition, special presentations were made to Distinguished Toastmaster Bobbi Fawcett and Toastmaster Susanna Henighan-Potter for their extraordinary work with the club and outreach to the community during the year. Toastmasters of the evening were Derek Alphonso and Nadia James-Harris. The Tortola Toastmasters Club was established in Oct 2003. Since its establishment, it has conducted and assisted with various community outreach events including judging for the Junior Minister of Tourism Speech Contests; preparation of contestants for participation in pageants; and conducting public speaking workshops for members of the community to name a few.

The Tortola Toastmasters Club meets on the first, third and fifth Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. at the Botanic Gardens. Visitors are welcome to attend the scheduled meetings. Interested persons can also like the club on Facebook Page at the Tortola Toastmasters Club.  The Toastmasters International motto is “Where Leaders are Made”. The mission of a Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity develop oral communication and leadership skills.
