Thursday, July 7, 2016 – The Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) received a timely injection of funds from NAGICO Insurance which will assist with the hosting of one of Virgin Islands largest summer programmes, anticipated to attract over 130 children.

During a presentation to YEP on Monday, July 4, Customer Relationship Officer, Shaquilla Smith, on behalf of NAGICO, contributed $1,000 to Stacy Mather, Executive Director of YEP.

“NAGICO Insurances is pleased to once again be supporting the Youth Empowerment Project. Youth who are engaged in community efforts at a young age are more likely to show better problem-solving and decision-making skills when compared to those youth who are not engaged. Youth who have been empowered by the community are likely to be future leaders,” Smith stated.

She added, “NAGICO thanks Stacy Mather and his team at YEP for all that they are doing. It is not always smooth sailing and it takes financial support to keep programmes like YEP operational. NAGICO Insurances will continue to support such programmes as part of our commitment as a life-long partner of the BVI community.”

As part of the seven-week summer program, YEP will provide activities such as art, sports, culinary arts, swimming, environmental exploration and team building. In addition, YEP is expected to expand the programme to offer community service projects, swimming, archery, virtual reality, computer coding, photography, videography, career enrichment and character development activities.

Additionally, YEP will be hosting over 30 guest speakers and 15 field trips for their ‘YEPpies’.

“YEP truly appreciates this donation from NAGICO,” Mather stated.

“We appreciate your commitment to youth development work in the BVI. YEP is now in our 11th year of serving the community and I can honestly say that this year things did look a bit brown for us and we wholeheartedly appreciate this donation. The 130 kids that we have enrolled for our summer program which is our largest and most active programme is going to be fabulous because of NAGICO’s commitment,” Mather also pointed out.

Last year, NAGICO supported YEP by purchasing tickets for the fundraiser of Soul Nativity by the Harlem School of Music and Arts.

In May, YEP, located at Witches Brew, celebrated their eleventh year of providing enriching and engaging programming for the youth of Tortola, with no enrollment fees. Over the past two years we have seen a growth in the number of children attending from across the territory, of which we are quite pleased. YEP remains the only facility in the BVI solely designed for youth activities.
