Frigate Bay resident fined EC8,500 on eight charges

By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ANTHONY ZARA of Vista Villas, Frigate Bay was recently convicted on eight charges and fined a total of EC$8,500 to be paid in one month.

According to a police communiqué issued on April 11, 2016, Zara was arrested, charged and cautioned for the offences of assault, making use of indecent language, escaping lawful custody, resisting arrest and insulting language.

He was also charged with battery on police, simple wounding and malicious damage to Government property and was granted bail in the sum of EC$10,000.00 and ordered to appear at the Basseterre Magistrate Court at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, May 9, 2016.

The offences were committed on April 7, 2016 at Frigate Bay.

It however appears as though the accused was not tried at the above mentioned date, because a police release yesterday afternoon (Jul. 11) informed that he had appeared at the Basseterre Magistrate Court before His Honour Reynold Benjamin to answer to the charges.

According to the police release, Zara was convicted on two counts of battery committed on 753 Constable Straker and 806 Constable Henry and was fined EC$2,000 to be paid in one month. He was also convicted of using insulting language towards 806 Constable Henry and was fined EC$250 to be paid in one month.

Zara was further convicted for resisting arrest from Constable Henry and was fined EC$ 1,000 to be paid in one, while he has to pay a fine of EC$2,000 for escaping lawful custody from Constable Henry, which has to be paid in one month.

For two other convictions, using indecent language towards Constable Henry and simple wounding committed on Constable Straker, he was fined EC$250 for the former and EC$2,500 for the latter. Both fines are to be paid in one month.

His final conviction was for malicious damage caused to the property of the Government of St. Christopher and Nevis and he was fined EC$500, which also has to be paid in one month.

The charges of battery on police, insulting language and resisting arrest committed against 513 Constable Mills were all withdrawn at the court, while the Magistrate had dismissed the case of assault on Constable Henry.

The police communiqué informed that once Zara pays the fines, no conviction would be on his record.

Ironically, the communique states that if he commits any offence within one year, he would have to return to court for sentencing of the offences.
