Premier Amory accepts plaque from Captain S J Ancona

Charlestown Nevis (October 17, 2005) Premier of Nevis, the Hon Vance Amory said on Monday that it was an honour to have a British Naval vessel visiting the island. He made the comments as he welcomed Commanding Officer of the HMS Cumberland, Captain S J Ancona, who paid a courtesy call on him at his Administration Office at Bath Plain.

He told the captain that it was really his pleasure to have them here and that he trusted that he and his men would have a good time, just relaxing and enjoying what the island had to offer.  He added, I want the officers to feel at home and enjoy a quite and relaxing moment.

The vessel which anchored in Nevis waters on Sunday 16 is scheduled to depart Nevis tomorrow (Tuesday) for Antigua after spending two nights in the harbour.  The last ship of the British Naval fleet visited Nevis since 1997.

Captain Ancona told Premier Amory that he and his men were absolutely delighted to be on the island and that he was sorry that it has taken so long for another UK warship to visit the island.  The captain promised to make up for lost time.

He was accompanied by the Honourary Consul of Great Britain to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Mr. Peter Alcorn and of his officers. They also paid courtesy call on the Deputy Governor, His Hon Mr. Eustace John at his Government House residence at Belle Vue.

The Deputy Governor also welcomed him to the island as he thanked him for the plaque he received.  He said, It's my pleasure to accept it (the token of appreciation) and to welcome you and your ship to Nevis.  We are happy once again to have another ship visiting us and I hope we do not have to wait so long again.  Next year you'll be back, said His Honour with a smile.

The Captain presented him with a plaque of the HMS Cumberland and also presented Premier Amory with a similar plaque.
