August 3, 2016 -- As part of its commitment to promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education in the Eastern Caribbean, U.S. Embassy Bridgetown was pleased to host Dr. Cardinal Warde, professor of electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), for two engagements with teachers and students on St. Kitts and Nevis on July 27 and 28. The events, which were held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and Royal Beach Casino, were the second leg of a three-country program which took place in Barbados, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Antigua and Barbuda.

Dr. Warde, who is also the executive director of the Caribbean Science Foundation (CSF), based in Barbados, first hosted a workshop for STEM teachers on July 27 at the St. Kitts Marriott titled “Adventures in STEM.” During the workshop, which was attended by primary and secondary school STEM teachers, Dr. Warde discussed ways to inspire and motivate students, long- and short-term strategies for teaching STEM, and ways to prepare students to study STEM at university.

Dr. Warde also hosted an interactive discussion with secondary school STEM students on July 28. This session was also held at the St. Kitts Marriott. It focused on ways students can develop their scientific skills outside the classroom, avenues for continuing to study STEM at university, and new career possibilities opening up in the STEM fields.

During both sessions, Dr. Warde shared pieces of his incredible personal journey, which saw him leave his homeland of Barbados as an aspiring student, and go on to become a full professor at one of the world’s most respected universities.

Deputy Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, Jeff Barrus noted, “Once again, we are very pleased to host a program of this nature in St. Kitts and Nevis. U.S. Embassy Bridgetown is committed to promoting STEM education, as the Obama Administration has made the investment and promotion of STEM education a priority. With this engagement, we wanted to underscore that STEM fields are critical in the development of societies, as they drive economies and innovation.”
