Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 04, 2016 (SKNIS): The St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF) is being billed as an agency which offers an array of opportunities that facilitates personal and professional development to its members.

On this week’s edition of “Working for You”, the agency’s public affairs officer, Captain Kayode Sutton, highlighted the pathways for growth in the military organization.

“We have educational opportunities where persons can apply to be members of the Defence Force and then they get an opportunity to attend one of the US (United States) military academies where they can pursue whatever [course] they want as long as the discipline is offered there,” Captain Sutton said. “They graduate with a degree and they also come out and be Commissioned Officers but they have to come back to St. Kitts and Nevis and serve.”

Educational opportunities for those wishing to study at home are provided through a partnership between the SKNDF and the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC). Soldiers also undertaking private courses are given flexible work schedules that allow appropriate time to attend classes, study and rest.

The message of personal development is often stressed by SKNDF Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Wallace. Captain Sutton said Lt. Col. Wallace’s words of advice is “seek to improve yourself, seek education,” while adding that the Commander wishes that persons are wiser and can be productive, well-rounded citizens after completing their years of service.

“You have people who have been in the Defence Force who have studied electrical, medicine, computer science and they have gone off to universities and they come back,” the public affairs officer said. “We have trained nurses, plumbers, masons, carpenters, you name it. The opportunities are there. Everybody has equal opportunities.”

He added that the training serves each soldier well during his/her time in the agency and also can be used when the soldier transitions back to civilian life.
