National Disaster Management to be enhanced by Shelters and Shelter Management Workshop

By: NEMA, Press Release

August 12th, 2016 -- A Shelters and Shelter Management Workshop is being convened by The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the USAID Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), to expose participants to the principles, practices and procedures involved in the shelter management process.

The workshop is slated to take place on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th of next week, at the NEMA Headquarters, at Lime Kiln. National Disaster Coordinator, Carl Herbert, says that the exercise speaks to a critical component of the expertise necessary to provide protection and security to displaced persons in times of disaster.

“In order to promote comprehensive guidelines for volunteers and other responders following an impact, training and more training are the constant in order to develop a core group of individuals to function as shelter managers. The implications for not ensuring due diligence in this area, can be disastrous.”

The workshop will be led by two local, OFDA trained Instructors in the persons of Messrs’ Terry Morris and Livingston Pemberton. It begins at 9am and concludes at 4pm daily.

Mrs. Claricia Langley-Stevens, the Deputy National Disaster Coordinator, is the Training Officer at NEMA.
