JAMKIT Association members celebrate Jamaican Olympic victories together

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce
By: JAMKIT, Press Release

Basseterre, St Kitts;  15 August 2016:  Last Saturday evening, 13 August 2016, members of the Jamaican Kittitian (JamKit) Association, the association of Jamaicans and friends of Jamaicans, living in the Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis (SKN), gathered at Boozie’s Restaurant & Bar on the Frigate Bay Strip, St Kitts to witness the running of the prestigious and exciting women’s 100m Olympics race where our beloved Shelly Ann Frazer-Pryce would race to defend her title from the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympics!

Tension ran high within our group as we waited anxiously for the race to start.  Shelly-Ann’s semi final run had us a little nervous as we could see her wincing in pain at the end of that race.  Speculation as to how she would perform dominated the minutes before the starting gun for the Finals. How would she perform?  Could she do it?   Could she make history?  Some of us paced.  Some sipped absentmindedly on our drinks.  Some of stared fixedly at the big TV screen.  However, with two Jamaicans running in the Finals, we knew we would medal.

Of course, now well documented in history, is the fact that Shelly-Ann finished in the third spot (10.83s) behind the USA sprinter Tori Bowie who barely edged her out with a time of 10.81s.  But the event belonged to Jamaican Elaine Thompson, who led the race from the start, finishing first with a blistering run of 10.71s to win gold.

Other customers at Boozie’s joined in the infectious, joyous and noisy celebrations that erupted within the JamKit group from the start to the end of the race!  What a glorious moment!  Jamaica as expected dominated the track as only we can do!  Congratulations to Elaine and Shelly-Ann from the Jamaicans living in SKN!  Awesome job ladies!  Well done!

The men’s 100m gathering was planned for the night of 14 August to do it all over again when Usain Bolt is expected to easily decimate his competitors in defense – for the third time! - of his 100m title.  Can’t wait!!

Well, that was from one Member.  Another Member put it this way:

Last Saturday a group of Jamaicans spent a wonderful time together in the company of Olympic athletes. No, not in Brazil, but right here on St. Kitts at the Boozie's Restaurant & Bar, Frigate Bay Strip. You see we gathered together to cheer on the female athletes competing in the 100m.  Our voices, I am sure, carried them to success because we were loud, excited, thrilled and ooohhh too nervous to watch the big screen from the seats reserved by the establishment for us!

Everyone in the room, whether they had come to have a drink or get something to eat, was swept up in our contagious euphoria. The Caribbean athletes did us proud!

Part two will see us back at Boozie's for the men's 100m (on Sunday, 14 August). Will we be loud and excited again?  I can guarantee it. GO JAMAICA!

    One Love!
