SKN under flash flood watch

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS a tropical disturbance makes its way closer to the Leeward Islands, the St. Kitts Meteorological Office has reported that a flash flood watch is in effect for those islands, inclusive of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Earlier, the disturbance had a 50 percent chance of developing into a tropical cyclone and according to the Met Office, the chances have increased and now present “a cause for some concern”.

“Although it is still more likely than not, that the system will impact us as no more than a tropical disturbance or strong tropical wave, we cannot rule out the disturbance rapidly developing and impacting us as a tropical cyclone. Hence, residents are urged to pay close attention to the progress of this weather system until it is out of the area.”

The weather disturbance could bring with it wet conditions and heavy thunderstorms with the possibility of one to three inches of rainfall across the islands and as such, a flash flood watch has been effected for the Leeward Islands, with the same being implemented for the British Virgin Islands sometime tomorrow.

Persons are reminded that it is best to avoid parking their vehicles in ghauts and other watercourses in the event that they become flooded. Individuals are also asked to monitor the weather and to stay tuned to the local media for updates on the disturbance.

“The weather is expected to subside by Wednesday night across the Leeward Islands and by Thursday afternoon across the British Virgin Islands. At this time, no storm-force winds are anticipated.”
