25th August 2016 -- “We congratulate all Caribbean Olympians and in particular our medalists for the outstanding performances at the recent Olympic Games. We are extremely proud that the region was well represented, both in medal counts and medals per capita.  Our Caribbean athletes were part of the many “must see” moments at the Rio Olympics, and CANOC Broadcasting was pleased to bring all these moments and more to viewers across the region”, said Steve Stoute, Chairman of CANOC Broadcasting.

CANOC Broadcasting Inc. was pleased to partner with FLOW and ESPN to offer Caribbean viewers unprecedented coverage of the Rio Olympics. Through our partnerships, viewers were able to see international and regional athletes compete across a wide range of disciplines, using multiple viewing options, including their television screens, the internet, or via innovative apps. “They were able to access the Flow micro sites, multiple channels on Free to Air or cable channels, and the FlowtoRioapp. We were especially proud that they were also able to access a range of interesting background stories and other information on the athletes or their favourite sports, all told in their own unique Caribbean voices”, said Stoute.

The Caribbean audience’s response was significant. At its peak CANOC’s social media reached over 4.2 Million people across the Caribbean, sixty six percent (66%) of this was via mobile handsets. Surprisingly Haiti had one of the most engaged social media audiences throughout the games. Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Bahamas and Barbados enjoyed consistently high social media engagement rates throughout the two week Games.

Through Flow Sports Channels alone, 4.6 million viewers across the Caribbean, were able to access the Games and the FlowRio2016Extra App skyrocketed to the number 2 position behind the worldwide phenomenon Pokemon Go and registered some 60,000 downloads across IOS and Android. According to CANOC Broadcasting CEO Larry Romany “The Rio Olympics has ignited a new passion in the region and we can expect to see an increase of young talent in new and traditional disciplines”.

The success of the CANOC Broadcasting model was not only in the more than 2000 hours of live coverage in each Caribbean country, but also due to the collaboration with partner FLOW and National Olympic Committees. CANOC Broadcasting is extremely pleased that beyond the broadcasting, FLOW has cultivated relationships with National Olympic Committees and Olympians that are already delivering value for regional Olympic Sport. Under the previous traditional broadcast model there was little to no engagement between the broadcasting entities, athletes and sporting bodies. Under this new partnership, FLOW has adopted a pioneering approach which saw direct financial contributions to National Olympic Committees and endorsement deals with up and coming athletes and future medalists like Machel Cedenio Andrew Lewis and Kalifa St Fort from Trinidad & Tobago as well as, Delano Williams and Lavern Spencer from Grenada to name a few.

This effort is only the beginning of a relationship between CANOC Broadcasting, FLOW and the Olympic movement. With these significant investments, we expect significant enhancement to our regional sports programmes and support for young athletes. During the next four years the plan is for similar regional executions for coverage of the CAC Games, Panam Games and Commonwealth Games in the run up to Tokyo 2020, all of which will keep Olympic sporting disciplines high on the agenda of our present and future athletes.
