BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - JUST days after a Police Constable was charged with introducing contraband into Her Majesty’s Prison, a Senior Prison Officer has found himself in the same situation.
A communiqué issued by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force this afternoon (Sept. 30) named the alleged offender as Vince Gumbs, whom SKNVibes understands is a Sergeant in the penal facility.
The release explained that investigations into the introduction of contraband into Her Majesty’s Prison led to the Cayon resident being arrested and charged on Thursday evening (Sept. 29).
The alleged offences are said to have taken place on September 23 and September 29.
He is charged with possession of cannabis with intent to supply, possession of cannabis, unlawfully conveying of tobacco and spirituous liquor to Her Majesty’s Prison, unlawfully conveying cannabis to Her Majesty’s Prison, unlawfully conveying other contraband – a cell phone and charger – into Her Majesty’s Prison.
Superintendent of Prisons Junie ‘Scrape’ Hodge is quoted in the release as expressing his feelings about the incident.
“The find last night was most disheartening knowing that a Prison Officer was responsible. I have told my officers we (myself and the leadership) expect them to have integrity, to do the right thing every time, and doing that we will support them. Likewise, we have told them they will be held accountable for their actions."
Hodge said the members of the institution which he runs “will remain vigilant in our efforts to rid (it) of contraband”.
Two days ago, Constable Cleavon Chumney was charged with introducing contraband into Her Majesty’s Prison after he allegedly threw a quantity of a substance suspected to be ‘weed’ over the adjoining wall of the prison and the Basseterre Police Station.
He was slapped with several criminal charges and one disciplinary charge and was suspended from duty until the matters have been dealt with.
