BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE wider St. Kitts-Nevis community is being encouraged to take pattern from the “Help A Child” programme which was founded by Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris to provide monetary assistance to primary school students.

This particular programme was founded 13 years ago and as recently as Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 19), 60 children from the Joshua Obadiah, Edgar T. Morris, Estridge and Violet Petty Primary Schools were in receipt of a combined EC$30,000 as part of the programme.

The ceremony took place at the Estridge Moravian Church in Mansion before hundreds of parents, guardians, loved-ones, government officials, well-wishers and sponsors.

In giving brief remarks, Senior Education Officer with responsibility for the abovementioned schools, Debbie Isaac, described the initiative as a powerful incentive to the academic lives of the recipients.

“The successful students are nominated by the respective schools to be recipients of this noble gesture. The Ministry of Education deems it a very generous act and takes the opportunity to solicit similar generous acts by other stakeholders in respective communities as well as nationwide to be a part of this wonderful way of demonstrating our best wishes and sincerest support to our nation’s children.”

In strengthening her admonition, she quoted Anne Frank and Mother Theresa who said “No one has even been poor by giving” and “If you can’t feed 100 people, then feed just one” respectively.

Over the life of the programme more than 300 students have benefitted from the more than EC$215,000 in monetary assistance.

The Senior Education Officer said the patents of the recipients should be grateful for such contributions which serve “to make their (the children) lives better and their education a reality.”

On behalf of the Ministry of Education, Isaac thanked Dr. Harris for his foresight and the investment he is making in the Federation’s future leaders.
